Stellar Jay

Posted by Picasa

This guy was real hard to get close to and to get him to stand still. The camera was zoomed right in to 12x and then the pictures were heavily cropped, but until I get a better picture of one of these Jays this will have to do. This is the first time I have seen Jays in and about our area. The Stellar Jay is the provincial bird of British Columbia. It's counterpart in the east is the Blue Jay....hard to imagine them catching balls and swing bats.

There is quite a difference in the dark colour and shape of the crest compared with the Ontario Blue Jay. As for the Toronto Blue Jays, they sometimes catch, often swing, seldom connect.
